Sepilok - Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre


Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre is only 25km northeast of Sandakan town, Sepilok is home to this well reserved 10,000ha tropical lowland rainforest sanctuary where scores of Orang Utan(Pongo Pygmaeus) roam free. This sanctuary is a facinating place where the visitors can observe wild animals being retrained for life in the jungle. Visitors are encouraged to visit during feeding time at 10am and 3pm for a more memorable experience. You can see the Orang Utans being feed from a platform in the middle of the forest, about a 20mins walk from the centre. Nicknamed; THE WILD MAN OF BORNEO, the animals are returned to the forest when they are able to fend for themselves.

Tambunan Village Resort Centre

Mahua Waterfall, Tambunan

15 minutes from Tambunan town, in the direction to Ranau, Mahua Waterfall is located in the area of Kg.Patau. Mahua fall is a newly discovered nature beauty in Tambunan, and currently developed as tourist attraction. The 500 metres walk through along a district and well maintained trail to the waterfall makes a pleasant stroll for visitors. Plus visitors will find it very interesting to see many species of butterflies and other kind of insect spread around the area decorating the forest greens.


Rungus Long House


Situated in the northern district of Kudat, the heartland of the Rungus people, Maranjak Homestay was developed by a family, which have come together for a community project to share their lifestyle and culture with visitors. The journey to Kudat (about 130 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu) will take about two and half hours, cruising the Land Below The Wind with rice field and magnificent mountain sight along the way. Maranjak Homestay began welcoming visitors to the longhouse in the village of Bavanggazo in 2002.
Each Rungus Longhouse (vinatang) measures 3 meters by 15 meters and comprises a long gallery or corridor (langsang sid apad), where socializing and community activities takes place, as well as several family ‘apartments’ (valai) each with own sleeping unit (tingkang sid ongkob), areas for cooking and working (langsang sid ongkob) and an attic (abai sid ongkob) and (abai sid apad). each family has its own valai. A typical longhouse has about ten valai, but larger ones may have fifteen or more.
Build on stilts, the Rungus Longhouse is always constructed on an east west axis to ensure a cool atmosphere throughout the day. Depending on the size of the house and the availability of materials, a longhouse takes at least three to four months to build in the traditional way. One of the best ways to become acquainted with the Rungus culture and their communal way of life is through a homestay experience in the longhouse.

Firstly, enjoy the island hoping tour to Sapi Island. The next stop is at Manukan Island where lunch is served at the island’s resort. Your final destination is Mamutik Island and transfer back to city hotel.


 

Salt Trail, Tambunan


Previously, there was no road from the interior to the coastaltown but only with bridle paths crisscrossing the hinterlands. These paths took the villagers down to the coastal town, where they exchange items for salt and other supplies. The traditional path have since been known as Salt Trail.

Klias Wetland Sanctuary


Located about 120km from Kota Kinabalu at the Klias peninsular is the Klias Wetland, a Mangrove Forest Reserve rich with river side wildlife and birds. Among the wildlife that could be sited at the Klias River are the proboscis monkeys, long tail macaque and silver languor monkey as well as a variety of birds.

Mount Kinabalu Climb


Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in south-east asia and offers a unique climb from tropical luxuriance through montane oak forest to the rocky sub-alpine summit plateau. The climb starts from Mount Kinabalu Park Headquarters, only a couple of hours drive but already more than 1500m above Kota Kinabalu on the coast.

Kudat Tip of Borneo


At the Tip of Borneo, Simpang Mengayau of Kudat, you can see the breath-taking view of wide and open coastline. It is considered one of the most beautiful spots in Sabah, and all the work is done by the nature.
In kudat, there is this aborigines called the Rungus people. En-route visit Sumangkap Village, well known for its “Gong” making skill by its local artisan. Proceed to the Bavanggazo Village for a Longhouse visit. Built entirely using local materials, it is a home to the Rungus people community, a sub-tribe of the indigenous kadazandusun. Observe their very own unique bead works, lifestyle and costumes.

Monsopiad Cultural Village


The Monsopiad Cultural Village is a reconstruction of the traditional buildings that the Kadazan tribe used to live many years ago. The main feature in Monsopiad is the House of Skulls where 42 remaining skulls of the headhunters and warrior Monsopiad hang from the rafters.
